RULES:

As UIC you will usually be asked to be part of the committee refining local league rules and ground rules for each level. There are guidelines available that will help you determine what should and should not be included in the local playing rules. If local rules are updated each year, pass them along to your local crew of umpires.

You should also consider teaching the rules to both your umpires and to the managers and coaches in your league.  Having your officials and coaching staff familiar with rules is preventative umpiring and should help prevent or reduce the incidents of protest.

EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORM:

Each umpire is expected to have their own gear. Work with league equipment manger to use loaner equipment if necessary and available.

All patched umpires are required to be in full uniform for all games unless approved. Junior Umpires should have an acceptable collared shirt and hat.

At minimum you must keep safety in mind.  For all umpires behind the plate they must wear shin guards, chest protector and mask.  Athletic supporter and cup is a must for male plate umpires.

GAME SCHEDULING:

All league game that requires umpires should be scheduled weekly, with flexibility needed if a replacement is needed.

Believe me when I say that this is one more place you want to be involved in the planning.  You have the opportunity to catch issues such as over booking or high demand days or times, and the like.  If you review the schedule as if you were assigning, you will see the issues more clearly than the person or persons creating the schedules.  Example: 3 games on Mon, Wed, Fri eve and one game on Tues, Thurs., means you need three pairs on some days and one pair on another.
